Soil mixes that were not amazing

Here are a few soil mixes that I have tried that I didn’t like very much. I’m not sure why anyone would read this, but it helps me keep track of what I have tried.

Soil Mix 1

Kellogg All Natural Indoor Potting Mix100%

This soil stays too wet for my purposes. It also grows fungus across the surface. Not every time, but on a few cells that I planted with seeds. That fungus prevents moisture from soaking into it. I think the pore space is a little too low as well.

Soil Mix 2

MaterialAmount by volume
Kellogg All Natural Indoor Potting Mix50%
Pumice 1/8”50%

This material drains well and has a level of absorbency that I like. It seems to form a crust on top. I’m not a fan of that. I’m guessing there might be some soluble materials that solidify when the water evaporates and glue the soil together.

Soil Mix 5

MaterialAmount by volume
Coco Coir67%
Pumice 1/8”33%
Seemed to be pretty decent, but stayed soggy for a long time when watered. I really do like the Coco Coir. I think maybe more pumice, or trying vermiculite or something else to loosen up the mix would be good.
At some point I think our cat climbed into the bucket and went pee in it! There were dirty footprints outside of it, and when I tried to use it there was a very strong ammonia smell. Eww! Bad kitty!
